2013 Italian Grand Prix: Talking Points

It was a Sebastian Vettel show right from the start to the finish at Monza, as the German prodigy claimed the 32nd win of his career, equaling his nemesis Fernando Alonso's tally of race victories till date. This victory also meant that Vettel was well on course to win his fourth straight drivers championship until and unless a miracle happens in the remaining races of this season.

Red Bull's gearbox problem threatened to dampen the fortunes of both their drivers who were forced to short-shift during the closing stages of the Italian Grand Prix. However, it did not cause any problems for them as Vettel and Webber finished 1st and 3rd respectively.

The final race of the European leg of this F1 season turned out to be a damp squib barring a few nail-biting moments in between involving Lewis Hamilton who rose through the field to finish 9th after starting from 12th on the grid. Hamilton had a nightmarish race as he suffered a slow puncture during the initial stages of the race and had to drive with a malfunctioning radio.

The tifosi who turned up in large numbers at the Autodromo Nazionale did not leave disappointed as their main man Fernando Alonso came 2nd after starting 5th. His teammate Massa finished 4th but could've ended up in the podium only if Webber hadn't undercut him in the only round of pitstop.

Kimi Raikkonen did not get any point for the second race in a row after Belgium where he was forced to retire. In Monza, he finished just outside the points in 11th. A first lap collision with Sergio Perez affected Raikkonen's chances of earning some points for the Lotus Renault team.

Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg had a dream weekend of sorts as he followed up his third place in qualifying with a 5th place finish - the best of his career, which earned his struggling Sauber team 10 precious championship points.

The F1 bandwagon begins its second Asian leg with the Singapore Grand Prix coming up next. And in the meantime, Pirelli will conduct a test with an old car of Red Bull being driven by Mark Webber's successor Daniel Ricciardo.
